# Ser in the present: soy, eres, es

> id: conjugation.present.irregular-ser · category: conjugation · depth: standard · levels: A1 · review: internally_reviewed

**Summary.** Fully irregular: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. The vos form is sos.

Ser is suppletive — its forms come from different Latin verbs — so nothing about the present can be derived from the infinitive: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son.

In voseo regions the form is vos sos (not *vos eres): sos boliviano, sos muy amable.

Ser expresses identity, origin, profession, time, and inherent characteristics; for states and location, Spanish uses estar — see the ser vs estar rule.

## Examples
- Soy ingeniero. — I'm an engineer.
- Son las tres de la tarde. — It's three in the afternoon.
- Vos sos de Tarija, ¿no? — You're from Tarija, right? (voseo)
