# Ser and ir share one preterite: fui

> id: conjugation.preterite.ser-ir · category: conjugation · depth: standard · levels: A2 · review: internally_reviewed

**Summary.** Fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron serves both verbs; context decides whether it means 'was' or 'went'.

Ser and ir have identical preterites: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Context always disambiguates — fui al mercado (I went), fui estudiante (I was).

No form carries a written accent: fue, not *fué.

The shared stem continues into the imperfect subjunctive (fuera/fuese) and the future subjunctive (fuere), again for both verbs.

## Examples
