# Imperfect subjunctive: hablara, tuviera, fuera

> id: conjugation.subjunctive.imperfect · category: conjugation · depth: standard · levels: B1, B2 · review: internally_reviewed

**Summary.** Take the preterite ellos form, drop -ron, add -ra endings: hablaron → hablara; tuvieron → tuviera; fueron → fuera. Every preterite irregularity carries over automatically.

One recipe, zero exceptions: preterite third-person plural minus -ron, plus -ra, -ras, -ra, -ramos (with an accent on the vowel before it: habláramos), -rais, -ran. Dijeron → dijera; durmieron → durmiera; construyeron → construyera; hubieron → hubiera.

Because the base is the preterite, every strong stem, raised vowel, and y-spelling is inherited for free — if you know the preterite, you know this tense.

It appears after past-tense triggers (quería que vinieras), in si-clauses with the conditional (si pudiera, lo haría), and in polite formulas (quisiera reservar).

## Examples
- Quería que vinieras conmigo. — I wanted you to come with me.
- Si tuviera más tiempo, viajaría. — If I had more time, I would travel.
- Quisiera hacer una consulta. — I would like to ask something. *(Polite formula.)*
