# Age with tener: tengo treinta años

Spanish expresses age with the verb tener + años, never ser: tengo treinta años, mi hija tiene siete años. The English/French calque *soy treinta is impossible. The question is ¿cuántos años tienes? or ¿qué edad tiene?

Años can be dropped in an answer when the context is clear: —¿Cuántos años tiene? —Cuarenta. And 'at (age) X' uses a los: empecé a trabajar a los dieciocho (años), se jubiló a los sesenta.

Birthdays use cumplir ('to complete' years): mañana cumplo cuarenta ('I turn forty tomorrow'), ¿cuándo cumplís años?, ¡feliz cumpleaños! The noun is el cumpleaños (invariable in the plural: los cumpleaños).
