# Will and requests: quiero que, pido que

**Summary.** Verbs of wanting and influencing trigger the subjunctive on the other subject: quiero que vengas, te pido que esperes, necesito que firmes.

Verbs of wanting, needing, asking, and influencing someone else's behaviour trigger the subjunctive in the subordinate clause, as long as there's a second subject: quiero que vengas, te pido que esperes, necesito que firmes hoy.

The family is large: querer, desear, esperar ('hope'), necesitar, pedir, exigir, sugerir, recomendar, aconsejar, prohibir, permitir, dejar, and hacer que ('to make someone…'). All require the two-subject setup: quiero que (tú) vengas.

With the same subject, drop to the infinitive: espero llegar temprano (not *espero que yo llegue), quiero descansar. Verbs like pedir, recomendar, and aconsejar usually take an indirect-object pronoun marking who's being asked: le recomendé que comprara, te pido que esperes.

## Examples

- Te sugiero que leas el contrato entero. — I suggest you read the whole contract.
- Necesito que me confirmes hoy y te pido que leas todo antes. — I need you to confirm today, and I ask you to read everything first.
