# Discourse markers: bueno, entonces, o sea, igual

> id: usage.discourse-markers · category: usage · depth: standard · levels: B2 · review: internally_reviewed

**Summary.** Bueno (well/OK), entonces (so), o sea (I mean), es decir (that is), igual (anyway/still), en realidad, por cierto (by the way), total (long story short).

Conversation glue: bueno opens and concedes; entonces draws conclusions and resumes; o sea reformulates (overuse marks casual speech); igual pivots ('still, anyway'); en fin wraps up resignedly.

Structuring: primero..., además..., por otro lado..., en resumen. Softeners before disagreement: a ver, lo que pasa es que..., digamos.

These markers organize talk rather than add meaning: bueno opens or concedes, entonces draws conclusions, o sea reformulates, igual pivots ('anyway'), and en fin wraps up. For writing, the structuring set is primero… además… por otro lado… en resumen; overusing o sea or a ver marks very casual speech.

## Examples
- Bueno, entonces quedamos así: vos cotizás y yo confirmo. — OK, so we'll do this: you get the quote and I confirm.
- Es caro, pero igual lo vamos a necesitar. — It's expensive, but we'll need it anyway.
- Bueno, entonces quedamos así; o sea, nos vemos el lunes. — OK, so we'll leave it like that; I mean, we'll see each other Monday.
