El que and el cual: relatives with an article

Explicación

After a preposition — especially a longer or compound one — Spanish prefers article + que (or the more formal article + cual), because the article carries gender and number and makes clear which noun the clause refers to: el edificio delante del cual quedamos, las condiciones bajo las que firmamos, la razón por la que vine.

El cual / la cual / los cuales / las cuales is the formal, written variant; el que / la que is the everyday one. Standing alone, el que also means 'the one who/that': el que llegó tarde fue Marco, los que quieran, que vengan.

For picking up a whole previous clause (not a single noun), use lo que or lo cual: dijo que no, lo que / lo cual me sorprendió ('…, which surprised me'). Lo que also means 'what' in the sense of 'the thing that': haz lo que quieras.
