Question words: dónde, cuándo, cómo, por qué, cuánto

Explicación

The interrogatives all carry a written accent: qué, quién(es), cuál(es), dónde, adónde, cuándo, cómo, cuánto/a/os/as, and por qué. The accent distinguishes them from their unaccented relative/conjunction twins (donde, cuando, como), and it survives in indirect questions: no sé dónde está.

Spanish never strands a preposition at the end the way English does — the preposition goes in front of the question word: ¿de dónde sos?, ¿con quién fuiste?, ¿para qué es esto?, ¿hasta cuándo?

A couple of specifics: adónde (or a dónde) asks direction with verbs of motion — ¿adónde vas? — while dónde asks static location; and cuánto agrees in gender and number before a noun: ¿cuántas personas?, ¿cuánto tiempo?
