Por: cause, exchange, movement through, duration

Explanation

Por generally looks backward or through, where para looks forward. It marks cause or motive: lo hice por ti, gracias por tu ayuda, por eso me fui ('that's why'). It marks exchange and price: lo compré por 50, te cambio esto por aquello.

It expresses movement through or around a space, and approximate location or time: pasamos por Cochabamba, caminamos por el centro, vive por aquí, por la mañana. It also gives duration (por dos horas), means (por teléfono, por correo), rate (dos veces por semana), and the agent of a passive: fue escrito por Borges.

Many fixed expressions are simply learned whole: por favor, por supuesto, por fin, por lo menos, por si acaso, por ahora, por ejemplo. The detailed contrast with para — when each is the right choice — is covered in the por/para rule.
