¡Qué...! exclamations

Explanation

The most productive exclamation pattern is ¡qué…!, which works with an adjective, a noun, or an adverb: ¡qué caro!, ¡qué rico!, ¡qué día!, ¡qué calor!, ¡qué lástima!, ¡qué bien!, ¡qué rápido! The accent on qué is obligatory, as in questions.

When you add an adjective to the noun, you must insert tan or más between them: ¡qué ciudad tan linda!, ¡qué casa más grande! Putting the adjective before the noun (*¡qué grande casa!) is wrong.

Two related openers exclaim over verbs: cómo and cuánto. ¡Cómo llueve! ('how it's raining!'), ¡cómo cambió todo!, ¡cuánto trabajo tienes! ('what a lot of work you have!'), ¡cuánta gente!
