Formality in Paraguay: vos, usted, and language choice

Vos is the intimate/peer default, usted marks respect. Guaraní bilingualism adds a layer: switching to Spanish can signal formality, Guaraní can signal intimacy.

Explanation

Vos is the intimate, peer-level default and usted marks respect (elders, officials, clients, first contacts). Titles (don, doña, señor, profesora) and softening particles temper requests, much as elsewhere.

Guaraní bilingualism adds a layer absent in other countries: switching to Spanish (rather than Guaraní) can itself signal formality or distance, while Guaraní can signal intimacy and solidarity. Start with usted with strangers and follow the other person's lead down to vos.

Language choice itself encodes register and place: Asunción and formal/official life lean more Spanish, while the interior and home life lean more Guaraní, so the same person may run a trámite in usted-Spanish and joke with family in vos-Guaraní. Some families also use usted with parents as a mark of respect, though far less rigidly than in, say, Colombia.
