Three 'times': tiempo, vez, hora

Explicación

English 'time' splits three ways in Spanish. Tiempo is time as duration (and also 'weather'): no tengo tiempo, ¿cuánto tiempo te queda?, hace buen tiempo. Vez is an occurrence or instance — a 'time' you can count: tres veces, otra vez, la primera vez. Hora is clock time: ¿qué hora es?, es hora de irnos.

So 'how much time' is cuánto tiempo, 'how many times' is cuántas veces, and 'what time' is qué hora. French speakers get an exact match: temps / fois / heure line up one-to-one with tiempo / vez / hora.

Each lives in common set phrases: a veces ('sometimes'), en vez de ('instead of'), de una vez ('once and for all'); a tiempo ('on time'), a la hora ('punctually'), ya es hora ('it's about time'); and hace tiempo ('a long time ago').
