Leaving: salir, irse, dejar

Explication

Three verbs split English 'leave'. Salir is to exit or go out — it focuses on the exit point or the outing: salgo de casa a las ocho, salir a cenar, salir con amigos. Irse focuses on departure itself, the act of going away: me voy, se fue temprano, and the universal me tengo que ir ('I have to go').

Dejar is the transitive one — to leave something or someone behind: dejé las llaves, dejá el paquete en portería. It also means 'to quit/stop' (dejar de fumar) and 'to let/allow' (dejame ver, no me deja salir).

So 'I left the office' = salí de la oficina; 'I left (departed)' = me fui; 'I left my keys' = dejé las llaves. Partir is more formal or literary, abandonar is stronger, and 'leave me alone' is dejame en paz.
